First, what is RFID?

RFID stands for radio-frequency identification, a wireless technology built on small chips embedded in the objects around you. These RFID chips transmit data to a nearby reader without touching it, which powers contactless payments through the chip embedded in credit and debit cards, plus passports, key fobs, transit passes, and access badges.

How RFID blocking works

Blocking interrupts that exchange at its weakest point: the radio waves themselves. It works in three simple steps.

  • The reader transmits. An RFID reader emits radio waves to power and communicate with a nearby chip.
  • The barrier disrupts. A layer of conductive material around the card absorbs and scatters those radio signals, forming what is often called a Faraday cage that neutralizes the signal.
  • Access is prevented. Because the waves cannot reach the chip, it never powers up, and unauthorized scanners get nothing back, keeping your information out of a thief's reach.

The effect is passive: there is no battery, switch, or activation. The shielding works whenever the card is inside the material and stops the moment you remove it to pay.

Here honesty helps. RFID blocking genuinely works, but real-world skimming is rare, and modern cards already fight back. To steal usable information, a thief would need to capture the transmission from the RFID chips at very close range and then decode it. Contactless cards use encrypted one-time transaction codes, keep transmission to a very short range, and do not send your security code, so the captured information is hard to turn into identity theft.
