The real difference

Open source or secure element: the core trade-off

For years the honest tension between these two brands was simple. Trezor gave you fully open-source firmware that anyone could inspect, but its early devices had no dedicated secure element, so a determined attacker with the physical device could, in lab conditions, extract the seed. Ledger gave you a certified secure element in every device that resists exactly that kind of physical attack, but its secure-element firmware was closed, so you were trusting the company rather than the code.

That gap has narrowed. Trezor's Safe line now pairs its open-source firmware with a certified secure element, which closes the old physical-extraction weakness while keeping the transparency that is the brand's whole point. Ledger, meanwhile, still ships a secure element across the board and supports far more assets, but has not opened its secure-element firmware, and that is what keeps the debate alive.

For most buyers the practical takeaway is this: on a modern device from either brand, your keys are safe as long as you set a strong PIN, keep your recovery phrase offline, and never type it into anything.
