Gemini Wallet review

The wallet inside the Winklevoss-founded Gemini exchange is heavily regulated and insured, with a new self-custody option added in 2025. The drawback is expensive beginner-mode fees.

The short answer

Gemini Wallet is Gemini’s regulated exchange wallet (free). Gemini is one of the more trustworthy places to hold crypto if you want a regulated custodian rather than to run your own keys. It is a New York trust company, was the first crypto exchange to complete a SOC 2 review, and carries 125 million dollars of digital-asset insurance on top of cold storage. In 2025 it also launched a genuine self-custody wallet for people who want to hold their own keys. The main drawback is cost: the simple buy-and-sell interface stacks a convenience fee, a transaction fee and a spread, which makes it pricey unless you use the advanced ActiveTrader view. The Gemini Earn saga is resolved, with users fully repaid and the SEC case dismissed, but it is worth understanding.

It scores 7.0 out of 10 on our fixed 40-point standard, and is our best insured custodial wallet, weighed on security, ease of use, supported assets, value and recovery. Strengths: Strong regulatory standing and SOC 2 history; $125M digital-asset insurance plus cold storage; Now offers a true self-custody wallet as well. Trade-offs: Simple-mode fees are high and layered; Very low Trustpilot sentiment and support complaints; The Gemini Earn freeze still colors its reputation.

Gemini is a regulated US exchange, and "Gemini wallet" mostly means the custodial wallet inside it, where Gemini holds your keys. As of 2025 there is also a separate self-custody Gemini Wallet. This Gemini Wallet review keeps the two clearly apart, and both apart from Google's unrelated Gemini AI, then weighs fees, the Earn history, and the alternatives.

The custodial wallet: regulated and insured

When you buy crypto on Gemini, it sits in a wallet Gemini controls, with most assets in offline cold storage and a small hot-wallet float. Gemini is chartered as a New York trust company, was the first crypto exchange and custodian to complete a SOC 2 review, and holds 125 million dollars of digital-asset insurance, 25 million on hot-wallet assets and 100 million on cold storage. That insurance covers a breach of Gemini itself, not phishing or an account takeover on your side, and US dollar balances get pass-through FDIC coverage at partner banks. It supports more than 80 coins across all 50 states, which is why it appeals to regulation-minded US buyers.

The Gemini exchange, trading and staking

The wallet does not exist on its own; it sits inside the Gemini exchange, so what you can do with your crypto is shaped by the platform around it. From one account you can trade more than 80 cryptocurrency assets, move funds into staking to earn yield on supported coins, spend through the Gemini Credit Card, and hold the Gemini Dollar stablecoin. Two trading surfaces set the fees: the simple app, where a trade carries a convenience fee plus a transaction fee, and ActiveTrader, whose maker-taker schedule starts around 0.20% maker and 0.40% taker for smaller trades and falls with volume. There is also a separate Gemini Custody service for institutions, priced per asset. For an active trader the exchange, staking and card together make the account more than a wallet; for a fee-sensitive beginner the simple-mode trading fees are the thing to watch.

The new self-custody wallet

In August 2025 Gemini launched a non-custodial Gemini Wallet, a web-based smart wallet with passkey login and no seed phrase, where only you control the keys. It covers Ethereum and layer-2s including Arbitrum, Polygon, Base and Optimism, with in-wallet swaps and some DeFi access. Being self-custody, it has no insurance and the key-loss risk is yours, so it is a genuine alternative to a wallet like Coinbase Wallet rather than an extension of the insured exchange balance.

Fees are the weak spot

The simple interface is easy but expensive: a convenience fee of around half a percent, a flat or percentage transaction fee, and a spread on top. Switching to ActiveTrader drops you to tiered maker-taker pricing that is far more reasonable for anyone trading with intent. If you only ever tap buy in the basic app, you will overpay, so use ActiveTrader for any meaningful volume.

The Earn question

Gemini Earn, a lending product that paid yield by lending your crypto to Genesis, froze in November 2022 when Genesis hit a liquidity crisis, locking funds for hundreds of thousands of users. Crucially, that was a lending product, not the custodial wallet: coins simply held in Gemini custody were never part of the freeze. Earn users were ultimately repaid in full in kind, Gemini settled with New York regulators, and in January 2026 the SEC dismissed its case with prejudice. The episode is closed, but it explains a lot of the negative sentiment you will still read, and it is why the score sits at 7.0 despite the strong custody credentials.

Gemini Wallet vs the alternatives

If you want insured custody on a regulated US exchange, Gemini is a strong option and few self-custody wallets can match the insurance. If you want to hold your own keys, its new self-custody wallet competes with Coinbase Wallet and Trust Wallet, though those are more mature and reach more chains. For the largest balances, a hardware wallet like the Ledger Nano X is safer than any exchange.

Price and value

Both Gemini wallets are free to hold; the cost is trading fees. In the simple app those fees are high, so the value is poor for a casual buyer who never switches interfaces; on ActiveTrader the maker-taker pricing is competitive and the value improves sharply. Weighed against the $125M insurance and regulatory standing, an active, regulation-minded US trader can get real value; a fee-sensitive beginner tapping the basic buy button will not.

Who should buy the Gemini Wallet

The custodial Gemini wallet suits regulation-minded US users who value insurance, SOC 2 standing and coverage in all 50 states, and who trade through ActiveTrader to avoid the high simple-mode fees. The self-custody Gemini Wallet suits someone who wants to hold their own EVM keys with passkey convenience. It is the wrong pick if you want the lowest fees in a basic interface, or the deepest multichain self-custody, where Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet or a hardware wallet is the better buy.

Questions

Gemini Wallet FAQ

Is the Gemini wallet custodial or self-custody?

Both exist. By default the wallet inside the Gemini exchange is custodial, meaning Gemini holds your keys. Since August 2025 there is also a separate non-custodial Gemini Wallet where only you control the keys. They are different products.

Is my crypto on Gemini insured?

The custodial exchange carries 125 million dollars of digital-asset insurance, 25 million on hot-wallet assets and 100 million on cold storage, covering a breach of Gemini itself. It does not cover phishing, account takeover, or your own mistakes. The self-custody wallet has no insurance.

Is "Gemini wallet" the same as Google Gemini?

No. Google Gemini is an unrelated AI product. This review is about the crypto wallet from the Gemini exchange founded by the Winklevoss twins. A lot of online "Gemini" ratings are actually for the AI, so be careful.

Why are Gemini fees considered high?

The simple buy-and-sell interface stacks a convenience fee of about half a percent, a transaction fee, and a spread. Using the ActiveTrader interface instead gives much lower tiered maker-taker fees.

What happened with Gemini Earn?

Gemini Earn was a lending product that lent your crypto to Genesis for yield. It froze in November 2022 during a liquidity crisis. It was a lending product, not custody, so simple custodial balances were unaffected. Earn users were later repaid in full in kind, and the SEC dismissed its case with prejudice in January 2026.

Was Gemini ever hacked?

Gemini's own exchange and custody wallets have not been breached. Two incidents involved third-party vendors: a 2022 exposure of customer emails via an outside provider, and a 2024 banking-partner incident. Neither was a breach of Gemini custody or a loss of funds.

Does Gemini offer staking?

Yes, and it is expanding, not shrinking. After exiting UK and EU staking, Gemini launched staking for New York clients in February 2026. Availability still varies by US state, so check your state.

How is Gemini rated?

It splits sharply: about 4.8 out of 5 on the App Store and 4.3 from NerdWallet, but only about 1.3 on Trustpilot, where support and fee complaints dominate. That gap is common for exchanges.

Is the Gemini wallet worth it in 2026?

This gemini crypto wallet review finds a heavily regulated, insured custodian, now paired with a new self-custody wallet. A gemini wallet review 2026 verdict is that it is strong on security and trust and weak on simple-mode fees, so it is best if you use the ActiveTrader interface to keep costs down.
