The short answer

Robinhood Wallet is Robinhood’s self-custody crypto wallet (free). A clean, approachable self-custody wallet that brings Robinhood's familiar polish to on-chain crypto, with genuinely broad coverage including Bitcoin, Solana, Dogecoin and several layer-2s, plus easy Apple Pay funding. Two things to be clear on. First, it is fully self-custody and separate from your custodial Robinhood account, so if you lose the recovery phrase, no one can recover your funds. Second, the old beta promise of no fees is gone: same-chain swaps now cost 0.80%, plus gas and provider fees, which is higher than swapping direct on some DEXs.

It scores 7.6 out of 10 on our fixed 40-point standard, and is our best self-custody wallet for beginners, weighed on security, ease of use, supported assets, value and recovery. Strengths: Polished, beginner-friendly Robinhood interface; Broad coverage including Bitcoin, Solana and Dogecoin; Apple Pay and Google Pay funding. Trade-offs: Swap fees of 0.80% are higher than some DEXs; The old no-fee promise no longer applies; Scam-token clutter with limited filtering controls.

Self-custody, and why that matters

This is the single most important point. The Robinhood Wallet is non-custodial: you hold the private keys and a secret recovery phrase, and Robinhood states it never has access to them. That is the opposite of crypto bought inside the main Robinhood brokerage app, which is custodial and account-recoverable. The trade is control for responsibility: lose the recovery phrase with no backup and the funds are gone for good. Robinhood offers iCloud, Google Drive or manual backup, plus biometric or PIN device locks, so a new self-custody user has guardrails, but the recovery phrase is still yours to protect.

The app, users and how it differs from the brokerage

Robinhood has tens of millions of users on its main app for stocks, options and custodial crypto, and the Robinhood Wallet is a separate product aimed at bringing those users into self-custody. Download the official Wallet app and you get a distinct wallet with its own seed phrase and its own access, holding only the assets you move into it; your stock and custodial crypto balances stay in the brokerage app. The important safety note is that the Wallet is a hot wallet, so your funds are connected to the internet and, unlike brokerage assets, are not FDIC insured or SIPC protected. Keeping your recovery phrase safe is the only thing standing between you and your funds, since Robinhood cannot restore access if it is lost.

Chains, features and funding

Coverage is broad for a single app: Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Dogecoin, plus Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, Base and Robinhood's own layer-2, Robinhood Chain. It handles same-chain and cross-chain swaps, bridging, dApp connections and NFTs, and you can fund it with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a transfer from your Robinhood account, which is the easiest funding path of any wallet if you already use Robinhood. More advanced additions, like perpetual futures through a partner, have arrived on Robinhood Chain.

The fee reality

Early beta marketing promised no network fees. That is no longer true. Robinhood now charges 0.80% on same-chain swaps and 0.73% on cross-chain swaps, on top of a small aggregator provider fee and network gas. There are occasional, narrow gas subsidies, such as covering fees on Robinhood Chain or for Gold subscribers, but there is no blanket free-swap option. For a fair comparison, that fee is higher than trading directly on some decentralized exchanges, so route large swaps with the cost in mind.

Security context

The often-cited Robinhood data breach happened in November 2021 and hit the brokerage support systems, exposing emails and names. It has nothing to do with the Wallet, which did not exist then and whose keys Robinhood never holds. The genuine day-to-day risk here is self-custody hygiene and scam tokens that appear in any on-chain wallet, not a Robinhood breach, so use the wallet's backup options and ignore unsolicited tokens.

Robinhood Wallet vs the alternatives

Against Coinbase Wallet, Robinhood offers a similarly easy onramp and multichain reach, with an edge if you already fund from a Robinhood account. Against Trust Wallet it reaches fewer chains but is more polished, and against Phantom it is broader than Solana but less specialized. The deciding factor is usually whether easy funding from Robinhood matters to you.

Price and value

The Robinhood Wallet is free to download and use, and holding crypto costs nothing; the cost is the 0.80% swap fee. For a beginner who values the easy Apple Pay or Robinhood funding and a familiar interface, that convenience is worth the fee on small trades. For a heavy trader, the fee makes it a wallet to hold in rather than swap in, so fund it here and trade larger amounts on a cheaper venue.

Who should buy Robinhood Wallet

The Robinhood Wallet is a strong pick for a beginner who wants a polished, multichain self-custody wallet with the easiest funding, especially an existing Robinhood user who wants Bitcoin, Solana and Dogecoin in one app. It is the wrong pick if you do a lot of large swaps and want the lowest fee, or if you expected it to be the same as your custodial Robinhood crypto, which it deliberately is not.

Trust, but verify

How to check it before you trust it

1Buy only from the maker direct

Never a marketplace reseller. Tampered devices are the main real-world risk.

2Confirm the device is genuine

Run the maker's authenticity check on first connection. Do not skip it.

3Generate the seed yourself

A genuine device shows a fresh, un-initialised state. Never accept a pre-set phrase.

4Test recovery with a small amount

Send a little, wipe, restore from your phrase, and confirm it returns before going big.

Questions

Robinhood Wallet FAQ

Is the Robinhood Wallet the same as crypto in my Robinhood account?

No. The Robinhood Wallet is a separate, self-custody app where you hold the keys. Crypto bought inside the main Robinhood brokerage app is custodial, held by Robinhood Crypto. They are different products with different recovery rules.

Is the Robinhood Wallet self-custody?

Yes. You hold the private keys and a secret recovery phrase, and Robinhood says it never has access to them. If you lose the phrase with no backup, the funds cannot be recovered.

What does it cost to swap?

Robinhood charges 0.80% on same-chain swaps and 0.73% on cross-chain swaps, plus a small provider fee and network gas. The early beta promise of no fees no longer applies.

Does it support Bitcoin?

Yes. The Wallet supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Dogecoin, plus layer-2s like Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, Base and Robinhood Chain.

Was the Robinhood Wallet affected by the data breach?

No. The widely cited breach happened in November 2021 and hit Robinhood's brokerage support systems. The Wallet did not exist yet, and Robinhood never holds Wallet keys, so it was unaffected.

How do I add crypto to it?

You can fund it with Apple Pay, Google Pay, a Robinhood Connect purchase, or a transfer from your Robinhood account.

Did the SEC take action against Robinhood over crypto?

The SEC issued a Wells notice to Robinhood Crypto, the custodial arm, in May 2024, then closed the investigation in February 2025 with no action. That concerned the custodial business, not the self-custody Wallet.

How is it rated?

As of this review the Wallet holds about 4.7 out of 5 on the App Store and 4.4 on Google Play.

What can you do with the Robinhood Wallet?

The Robinhood Wallet lets you store, send and receive digital assets across supported networks, swap tokens, and connect to Web3 dApps, NFT marketplaces and DeFi platforms. You hold your own private keys, and can receive NFTs on supported networks. Users can import an existing wallet or create a new one, and eligible coins in a Robinhood Crypto account can be transferred in. It is a full self-custody Web3 gateway rather than just storage.

Is the Robinhood wallet good for Bitcoin?

Yes, it supports Bitcoin directly. This robinhood bitcoin wallet review finds Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Dogecoin all covered in one self-custody app, with easy Apple Pay funding. As a robinhood crypto wallet review verdict, it is a polished, beginner-friendly option, held back mainly by the 0.80% swap fee.
