Blockstream Jade review

This Jade wallet review looks at Blockstream's take on a hardware wallet: keep it cheap, keep it fully open, and replace the usual secure-element chip with an open-source scheme. It is one of the most interesting budget devices out there, and this review explains the model that makes it possible, its Bitcoin-only scope, and how it stacks up.

What Jade is

Blockstream Jade is a Bitcoin-focused hardware wallet from Blockstream. The original Jade is about $67, with a newer Jade Plus from $149 that adds a bigger screen, microSD and secure boot. Both have a color screen and a built-in camera for air-gapped signing by QR code, plus USB-C and Bluetooth. It supports Bitcoin mainnet and the Liquid Network, including Liquid assets, and nothing else, so it is squarely a Bitcoin device.

The blind-oracle security model

This is the crux of any Jade review, and it is often misunderstood. Neither Jade nor Jade Plus has a physical, certified secure element. Instead your seed is stored strongly encrypted on the device, and the key to decrypt it is split between the device and a remote blind oracle. You enter a PIN on Jade; the oracle, which only ever stores a hash of your PIN, helps reconstruct the decryption key without ever seeing your PIN, keys or addresses, and too many wrong PINs trigger a wipe. So a thief with a locked Jade has nothing usable. Blockstream calls this a virtual secure element and argues it matches or beats a chip while staying fully open. You can also run your own oracle, or use Jade fully offline in a stateless mode with SeedQR, no server at all.

Custody, coins and companion apps

Jade uses a standard BIP39 recovery phrase with an optional passphrase for hidden wallets, supports multisig, and can act as one key in a multisig quorum. It pairs with the Blockstream app, and with Sparrow, Electrum, Nunchuk and Specter, so you are not locked into one interface. This Jade hardware wallet review rates that flexibility highly, though the Bitcoin-and-Liquid-only scope means it is not for multi-coin holders, who should look at a multi-coin device instead.

Security record and the ESP32 scare

Jade is fully open source, firmware and hardware, and has a clean fund-safety record. In 2025 a reported flaw in the widely used ESP32 chip it is built on sparked headlines, but Blockstream showed Jade does not rely on that chip for seed entropy or as a trusted signer, and it was deemed unaffected. As with any hardware wallet, buy direct from Blockstream and verify the device on first use.

Blockstream Jade vs the alternatives

Against the Coldcard, Jade is far cheaper and easier but relies on the blind-oracle model rather than dual secure elements. Against the Trezor Safe 5 and Keystone 3 Pro, Jade gives up multi-coin support and a physical secure element for full openness and a very low price. For a budget, open-source Bitcoin signer, few devices compete.

Price and value

At about $67, the Jade is one of the cheapest real hardware wallets you can buy, and even the Jade Plus at $149 undercuts most rivals' flagships. For that you get fully open firmware and hardware, camera air-gapped signing, multisig and broad app support, which is exceptional value for a Bitcoiner who accepts the blind-oracle model or runs it offline. The value only drops if you specifically want a certified secure-element chip or coins beyond Bitcoin.

Who should buy Blockstream Jade

Jade suits a Bitcoin holder who values fully open source, wants camera-based air-gapped signing, and is happy with the blind-oracle model or will run it offline, all at a low price. It is the wrong pick if you need a certified physical secure element, coins beyond Bitcoin and Liquid, or dislike Bluetooth on a cold-storage device, in which case a Coldcard or Trezor is the better choice.
