Electrum Wallet review
A veteran, open-source, self-custody Bitcoin wallet with unmatched fee and coin control. Powerful and free, but the interface is dated and fake-clone phishing is a constant risk.
Electrum Wallet is Electrum Technologies’s desktop bitcoin wallet (free). An Electrum Bitcoin wallet review comes down to a simple trade: power for polish. Electrum is free, open source, fully self-custody, and gives you granular control that newer wallets do not, including manual fees, replace-by-fee, coin control, multisig and broad hardware-wallet support, all while syncing in seconds because it is a lightweight client. The downsides are a dated, intimidating interface, Bitcoin-only scope, and a real security context: malicious servers stole millions from out-of-date clients in 2018 and 2019, and fake Electrum sites still phish users through search ads. On current versions, downloaded only from electrum.org and verified, it remains one of the best wallets for anyone who wants control.
It scores 7.8 out of 10 on our fixed 40-point standard, and is our best Bitcoin wallet for power users, weighed on security, ease of use, supported assets, value and recovery. Strengths: Free, open source and fully self-custody; Unmatched fee and coin control; Hardware-wallet and multisig support. Trade-offs: Dated, intimidating interface; Fake Electrum sites phish through search ads; Bitcoin-only, with basic Lightning.

What Electrum is
Electrum is a free, open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin wallet for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with no iOS version. Your private keys are encrypted and never leave your computer. It is a lightweight client, meaning it does not download the whole blockchain; instead it connects to Electrum servers and verifies transactions with simplified payment verification, which is why it opens in seconds rather than hours. It is Bitcoin-only, and proud of it.
Seed, recovery and self-custody
Electrum uses its own seed format by default rather than the standard BIP39 wordlist, embedding a version number, though it can import a BIP39 seed when you pair a hardware wallet. Your wallet file is encrypted with your password, and you can export private keys to other Bitcoin clients, so there is no lock-in. It also does cold storage and watch-only wallets, letting you keep keys offline and monitor balances online, which is a favorite setup for serious holders.
The controls power users love
This is where Electrum shines. You get a fee slider and manual sat-per-byte rates, replace-by-fee and child-pays-for-parent to unstick transactions, full coin control to choose which inputs you spend, and multisig for splitting a wallet across several keys. It supports Coldcard, Trezor, Ledger and KeepKey hardware wallets, and even added a built-in Lightning Network implementation, though its Lightning is basic next to dedicated Lightning wallets.
Security, servers and everyday use
For everyday use, Electrum's security model is simple to reason about: your private keys are encrypted and stored locally on your computer and never transmitted over the internet, so an attacker cannot lift your keys from a server, and every transaction is signed on your machine. The wallet software connects to Electrum servers only to fetch balances and broadcast a signed transaction, never your keys, and you can point it at your own server or run it over Tor for privacy. A dynamic fee algorithm estimates the right fee for your target confirmation time, or you can override it by hand. Combined with hardware-wallet support, multisig and watch-only wallets, that gives a security-conscious Bitcoin user a lot of control over how their crypto is stored and spent, which is exactly why advanced users rate its features so highly despite the plain look.
The security you must understand
Electrum has a long, sound track record, but two things need care. First, between 2018 and 2019, attackers ran malicious Electrum servers that, on client versions before 3.3.3, could display a fake update message linking to a booby-trapped download that stole funds, with reported losses well over 771 BTC. It was fixed by no longer rendering server messages as rich text, so up-to-date versions are not vulnerable. Second, fake Electrum websites still buy search ads to trick people into downloading malware, since the real project never advertises. The rule is simple: download only from electrum.org, verify the signatures, and keep the software current.
Electrum vs the alternatives
For an easy mobile Bitcoin wallet, BlueWallet is friendlier and has better Lightning. For built-in privacy tooling, Wasabi adds Tor and CoinJoin plumbing. For cold storage, a Coldcard is the air-gapped choice. Electrum's edge is unmatched fee and coin control in a fast, free desktop client, which none of those match for a hands-on Bitcoiner.
| Electrum | BlueWallet | Wasabi | Coldcard | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | Desktop + Android | Mobile | Desktop | Hardware |
| Coin control | Excellent | Basic | Excellent | Yes |
| Lightning | Basic | Yes | No | No |
| Open source | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Power users | Easy Bitcoin | Privacy | Cold storage |
| Score | 7.8 | 7.4 | 6.5 | 6.8 |

Fees and value
The software is free, and you pay only Bitcoin network fees, which Electrum lets you control more precisely than almost any wallet, so you can pay less when the mempool is calm and bump a stuck transaction when it is busy. For a fee-conscious Bitcoiner that control alone is worth a lot, and there is no subscription or hidden swap fee, since Electrum does not sell swaps. It is one of the best-value Bitcoin wallets there is, provided you value control over hand-holding.
Who should buy Electrum
Electrum suits the technical or intermediate Bitcoiner who values fee and coin control, hardware-wallet and multisig support, and speed, and does not mind a plain, dated interface. It is the wrong pick for beginners who want a friendly, multi-coin app or an iOS version, who will be happier with a wallet like BlueWallet or a multichain option.

Electrum Wallet FAQ
Is Electrum safe?
On current versions downloaded from electrum.org, yes. It is open source, self-custody and battle-tested since 2011. The two risks are out-of-date clients, since malicious servers exploited versions before 3.3.3 in 2018 and 2019, and fake Electrum websites that phish through search ads. Keep it updated and verify the download.
Where do I download Electrum safely?
Only from the official site, electrum.org, and verify the signatures before running it. Fake lookalike sites buy search ads to distribute malware, and the real project never advertises, so an ad result is a red flag.
Does Electrum use a BIP39 seed?
By default Electrum uses its own seed format rather than the standard BIP39 wordlist, though it can import a BIP39 seed when you connect a hardware wallet. Keep your seed written down and offline.
What was the Electrum hack?
Between 2018 and 2019, attackers ran malicious Electrum servers that showed a fake update message to clients before version 3.3.3, linking to a malicious download that stole funds, with reported losses over 771 BTC. It was fixed by no longer rendering server messages as rich text, so updated versions are not vulnerable.
Does Electrum support hardware wallets?
Yes. It works with Trezor, Ledger, KeepKey and Coldcard, so you can keep your keys on an offline device while using Electrum's powerful interface to build and broadcast transactions.
Is Electrum good for beginners?
Not especially. Its interface is powerful but dated and can intimidate newcomers, and it is Bitcoin-only. It is best for technical or intermediate users who want control. Beginners may prefer a friendlier app.
Does Electrum support the Lightning Network?
Yes, it added a built-in Lightning implementation for opening channels and sending or receiving Lightning payments, though it is basic compared with dedicated Lightning wallets like Phoenix.
How much does Electrum cost?
It is free, with no purchase or subscription. You pay only Bitcoin network fees, which Electrum lets you set precisely with a slider or manual rate.
How does Electrum work?
Electrum is a lightweight Bitcoin client. Rather than downloading the whole blockchain, it connects to Electrum servers to fetch balances and broadcast transactions, and verifies them with simplified payment verification. The open-source software, released under an MIT license, runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and keeps your private keys encrypted on your own device.
