The short answer

BlueWallet is a bitcoin and lightning wallet (free). A bluewallet bitcoin wallet review has to praise how much it fits on a phone. BlueWallet is free, open source and, for on-chain Bitcoin, genuine self-custody, with a feature set that shames most mobile wallets: multisig vaults, watch-only wallets, coin control, air-gapped hardware signing with Coldcard and others, custom fees and encrypted decoy wallets. The important change: BlueWallet used to run a custodial Lightning service on its own hosted node, which it shut down in May 2023, moving to self-custody only. Lightning now requires connecting to your own or a third-party node, which is more powerful but less turnkey. As a self-custody on-chain wallet, it is one of the best free mobile options.

It scores 7.4 out of 10 on our fixed 40-point standard, and is our best open-source mobile Bitcoin wallet, weighed on security, ease of use, supported assets, value and recovery. Strengths: Free, open source and no KYC; Genuine on-chain self-custody with a BIP39 seed; Desktop-grade features: multisig, watch-only, coin control. Trade-offs: Lightning now needs your own or a third-party node; Hot wallet, with keys on an online phone; Bitcoin-only, and built-in Tor was removed.

What BlueWallet is

BlueWallet is a free, open-source, MIT-licensed Bitcoin and Lightning wallet, launched in 2017, available on iOS, Android, a macOS app and a browser extension. It requires no accounts and no KYC. For on-chain Bitcoin it is self-custody: it generates a standard BIP39 seed on your device, and your keys never leave it, so you truly own your coins.

Desktop-grade features on a phone

This is the draw. BlueWallet includes a multisig vault where several keys are needed to spend, watch-only wallets to monitor cold storage without exposing keys, and air-gapped hardware-wallet signing through partially signed transactions with devices like Coldcard, Passport, Jade and Keystone. Add coin control to label and select your UTXOs, custom fee rates with replace-by-fee and child-pays-for-parent, batching, and an encryption feature that reveals a decoy wallet under a second password. Few mobile wallets come close to this level of control.

The Lightning change you need to know

Here is the nuance a current review must flag. For years BlueWallet ran a custodial Lightning service on its own hosted node, meaning it held your Lightning funds. On May 31, 2023, it shut that hosted service down and stated it would only support self-custody going forward. The underlying software, LNDHub, remains open source and self-hostable, so today you connect BlueWallet's Lightning to your own node or a third-party provider. That is more in keeping with self-custody, but it is less plug-and-play, and any custodial exposure now depends on whichever node you connect to, not BlueWallet itself.

Managing your Bitcoin day to day

BlueWallet lets you create and manage multiple wallets in one app, so many users keep separate wallets for spending and savings. Everyday transactions are simple: you scan a QR code or paste an address, set the network fee from the presets or a custom rate, and send, and each transaction is broadcast to the Bitcoin network directly. Biometric authentication and a PIN gate access to the app. It is a lot of control for everyday users without demanding they understand every detail.

Setup, security and recovery

Setup is quick: you create a wallet, the app generates a BIP39 recovery phrase, and you write down those seed words, which are the only way to restore access to your funds if your phone is lost, since BlueWallet holds no copy. Day-to-day security rests on biometric authentication and a PIN to open the app, and the private keys stay encrypted on the device, but a fair criticism, and one many users raise, is the lack of app-level two-factor authentication, so protecting the phone and the seed phrase is entirely on you. For recovery, that same seed phrase restores your Bitcoin into BlueWallet or any other BIP39 wallet, and watch-only and multisig setups let more careful users add layers. It is a lot of crypto self-custody power in one app, but the responsibility for keeping the keys and phrase safe is yours alone.

BlueWallet vs the alternatives

For the simplest Bitcoin and Lightning onboarding, Muun is easier but pricier on Lightning fees. For maximum desktop coin control, Electrum goes deeper but is less mobile-friendly. For privacy and Monero, Cake Wallet is the choice. BlueWallet's niche is desktop-grade Bitcoin power, multisig, watch-only and hardware signing, in a phone app.

Security, fees and value

BlueWallet is open source, so its code can be reviewed, and it has no known fund-loss breach, though we found no published formal third-party audit. It is a hot wallet, with keys on an internet-connected phone, so it carries the usual online exposure, which is why the hardware-signing and watch-only features matter for larger balances. There are no BlueWallet fees; you pay only Bitcoin network fees on-chain and standard routing fees on Lightning, so for a free wallet with this much capability the value is excellent, provided you want Bitcoin rather than a multichain app.

Who should buy BlueWallet

BlueWallet suits a Bitcoiner who wants a powerful, free mobile wallet with real self-custody and features like multisig, watch-only and hardware signing, and who is comfortable connecting their own node for Lightning. It is the wrong pick for someone who wants the simplest possible custodial Lightning experience, or a multi-coin wallet, in which case a dedicated Lightning wallet or a multichain option is easier.

Questions

BlueWallet FAQ

Is BlueWallet self-custody?

For on-chain Bitcoin, yes: it generates a BIP39 seed on your device and your keys never leave it. Lightning used to run on BlueWallet's custodial hosted node, but that closed in May 2023, so Lightning now connects to your own or a third-party node.

Did BlueWallet shut down its Lightning service?

It shut down its custodial hosted Lightning node on May 31, 2023, and moved to self-custody only. The LNDHub software is open source and self-hostable, so you now point BlueWallet's Lightning at your own node or a third-party provider.

Is BlueWallet safe?

It is open source, so its code can be reviewed, and it has no known breach, though we found no published formal audit. It is a hot wallet with keys on your phone, so use its watch-only and hardware-signing features for larger amounts.

Does BlueWallet support hardware wallets?

Yes. It signs air-gapped through partially signed transactions with devices including Coldcard, Passport, Jade and Keystone, letting you keep keys offline while using the app.

Is BlueWallet free?

Yes. There are no first-party fees. You pay only standard Bitcoin network fees on-chain and routing fees on Lightning. A node you connect to may set its own server fee.

Does BlueWallet support coins other than Bitcoin?

No. BlueWallet is Bitcoin and Lightning only. It does not support Ethereum, other altcoins, or tokens.

Does BlueWallet have multisig?

Yes, it includes a multisig vault that requires several keys to spend, which is a strong option for securing larger holdings, unusual to find in a free mobile wallet.

Does BlueWallet still have Tor?

No. Built-in Tor support was removed in late 2023 due to an unmaintained dependency. Users who want Tor are pointed to a separate app or a VPN.

How do I send a transaction in BlueWallet?

To send, open the wallet, scan the recipient QR code or paste the address, enter the amount, choose the network fee from the presets or a custom rate, and confirm. Each transaction is broadcast to the Bitcoin network directly. You can create and manage multiple wallets from one screen, and biometric authentication protects access to the app.
