Muun Wallet review
The easiest way to self-custody Bitcoin and Lightning in one app, with no channels to manage. The catch is real: its submarine-swap design can make Lightning payments expensive when fees spike.
Muun Wallet is Muun’s bitcoin and lightning wallet (free). Muun is one of the friendliest on-ramps to self-custody Bitcoin: no accounts, no KYC, one unified balance for on-chain and Lightning, and nothing to manage. But it is not a native Lightning wallet. It bridges to Lightning using submarine swaps, which means Lightning payments can require an on-chain transaction and inherit on-chain fees. In the 2023 fee spike that turned ugly, with small withdrawals costing a large share of the amount and users migrating to Phoenix. Add weak on-chain privacy, since Muun's servers see your transactions, and a recovery model that is a PDF Emergency Kit rather than a simple phrase. Great for a beginner's first sats, less so once fees rise or privacy matters.
It scores 6.8 out of 10 on our fixed 40-point standard, best suited to easiest self-custody Bitcoin wallet, weighed on security, ease of use, supported assets, value and recovery. Strengths: One of the easiest self-custody Bitcoin wallets; No accounts, no KYC, no channel management; Open-source recovery tool and Emergency Kit. Trade-offs: Lightning uses submarine swaps, so fees can spike; Weak privacy, as Muun servers see your transactions; Recovery is a PDF kit, not a simple seed phrase.

Self-custody made simple
There are no accounts and no KYC; you are in self-custody from the first screen. Under the hood Muun is a two-of-two setup: one key on your phone and one on Muun's server, so neither Muun nor a thief with only your phone can move funds alone. On-chain Bitcoin works normally, with Taproot on by default and a mempool-based fee estimator. It is genuinely one of the gentlest introductions to holding your own keys, which is why it earns a 9.0 for ease of use in our testing even though its overall score is held back by the issues below.
Bitcoin and Lightning in one balance
Muun's signature feature is a single balance that spans on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning, with no channels to open, fund or manage. For a newcomer that is a genuine simplification: you just have bitcoin, and the wallet decides how to send it. The trade-off, covered next, is how Muun bridges the two networks under the hood.
The Lightning fee problem
This is the crux of any Muun Wallet review. Muun is not a native Lightning node; it uses submarine swaps to move between on-chain and Lightning. That keeps the app simple, but it means Lightning activity can trigger an on-chain transaction and pay on-chain fees. When the mempool is calm this is tolerable; when fees spike it is not. In May 2023 Muun publicly flagged problems receiving Lightning payments, small withdrawals cost a painful share of the amount, and many users moved to native Lightning wallets. Reviewers estimate Muun's effective Lightning fees can run many times higher than a native Lightning wallet, so it is a poor fit for frequent small Lightning payments.
Recovery is a kit, not a phrase
Muun deliberately avoids a lone 12-word seed, arguing it does not capture the two-of-two setup. Instead you keep an Emergency Kit, a PDF holding your encrypted keys and the output descriptors, unlocked by a separate Recovery Code you write down. The recovery tool is open source, so you can retrieve funds without Muun online. It works, but it is more to store and less familiar than a seed phrase, so back up both the kit and the code carefully.
Privacy and gaps
Because the design is server-assisted, Muun's servers can see your transaction data, so it rates poorly on privacy against a wallet like Electrum run over Tor. There is also no coin control, UTXO management or transaction labeling, and independent trackers list the iOS build as not reproducibly verifiable. No breach of Muun has been reported, but these are real gaps for a privacy-focused Bitcoiner.
Muun Wallet vs the alternatives
For an easy Bitcoin and Lightning wallet, Muun's main rivals are BlueWallet, which offers more flexible Bitcoin and optional Lightning, and Electrum, an advanced on-chain wallet with no Lightning but far more control. A native Lightning wallet is the better choice if Lightning is your main use.
| Muun | BlueWallet | Electrum | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Networks | Bitcoin + Lightning | Bitcoin + Lightning | Bitcoin on-chain |
| Custody | 2-of-2 self-custody | Self-custody | Self-custody |
| Lightning | Submarine swaps (fees spike) | Optional Lightning | No Lightning |
| Best for | Easiest onboarding | Flexible Bitcoin | Advanced on-chain |
| Score | 6.8 | 7.4 | 7.8 |

Price and value
Muun is free to download and use, with no subscription. The real cost is in Lightning fees: because of the submarine-swap design, moving small amounts over Lightning can cost far more than on a native Lightning wallet, so the value depends entirely on how you use it. As an easy on-chain Bitcoin wallet it is good value; as a frequent-Lightning wallet it is expensive.
Who should buy Muun Wallet
Muun is a strong pick for a beginner who wants the easiest possible self-custody Bitcoin wallet, holds mostly on-chain, and values no accounts or KYC. It is the wrong pick if you make frequent small Lightning payments, want strong privacy and coin control, or prefer a familiar seed-phrase backup. Those users should look at a native Lightning wallet or a more advanced on-chain wallet instead.

Muun Wallet FAQ
Is Muun self-custody?
Yes. Muun is non-custodial, using a two-of-two setup with one key on your phone and one on Muun's server, so neither Muun alone nor someone with only your phone can move funds. You recover with an Emergency Kit, not a standard seed phrase.
Why are Muun's Lightning fees high?
Muun is not a native Lightning wallet. It bridges to Lightning using submarine swaps, which can require an on-chain transaction, so Lightning payments inherit on-chain fees. When network fees spike, small Lightning payments and withdrawals can become expensive.
What happened to Muun in 2023?
During a May 2023 fee spike, Muun flagged issues receiving Lightning payments because its submarine-swap design forces on-chain transactions. Small withdrawals cost a painful share of the amount, and many users moved to native Lightning wallets like Phoenix.
How do I back up Muun?
With an Emergency Kit, a PDF containing your encrypted keys and output descriptors, unlocked by a separate Recovery Code you write down. The recovery tool is open source, so you can retrieve funds even if Muun is offline.
Is Muun private?
Not very. Because the design is server-assisted, Muun's servers can see your transaction data, so it rates poorly on privacy compared with wallets that connect to your own node.
Does Muun support coins other than Bitcoin?
No. Muun is Bitcoin and Lightning only. It does not support Ethereum, Solana or other chains.
Has Muun been hacked?
There is no reported breach of Muun. The 2023 problems were about fees and usability during congestion, not a security compromise. As always, guard your Emergency Kit and Recovery Code.
Is Muun a good first Bitcoin wallet?
For getting started with small amounts, yes, its onboarding is excellent. As your balance grows or if you use Lightning heavily, a native Lightning wallet like Phoenix will cost far less.
Is the Muun wallet safe in 2026?
This muun wallet security review finds genuine self-custody with an open-source recovery tool, but weak on-chain privacy, since Muun servers see your transactions. A muun wallet review 2026 verdict is that its onboarding is excellent for beginners, while the submarine-swap Lightning fees are the reason not to keep large or heavily used balances in it.
How does Muun handle Bitcoin transactions and fees?
Muun is a full self-custody app where you control the keys and funds, with no custodial provider holding your Bitcoin. On-chain fees are set by the network, while Lightning fees run higher because of submarine swaps. The open-source recovery code protects your funds, and the Android and iOS apps give simple send-and-receive control without multi-channel management. Support is community and email based.
